It’s no secret that weight loss causes stress. With a holiday season and family gatherings, it is likely that you will put off your efforts. But should you do this over the holidays? I am not going to say “no" or “yes." However, sometimes just putting off those long runs can be beneficial. Just as our body knows how to control its fat cells, so too does an emotional diet become hard to follow if we focus on making ourselves look better. And because of this, it may seem best to hold off from certain activities for the holidays until you feel more comfortable. Here are some facts about this:
You don’t need to lose those pounds all at once
When we reduce our bodies' appetite and burn out, the calories slow down. Most people start losing weight by following a new pattern for most of their summer. This usually starts with hiking, swimming, getting in shape, working out, or trying new recipes. Unfortunately, when we work up those calorie counts, they quickly balloon back again while burning through calories that we didn’t create. By holding off the rest of the year, you take away the risk of having these unwanted extra calories pop back up.
You have time and space for reflection
Most of us are busy. If you want to make the time to reflect on what went well and what needs to change, it might be time to give yourself some time. While our minds are often preoccupied with the idea of whether we have lost all those pounds or not, many people are very thankful to be able to think about this without them constantly checking in on us.
When we’re stressed, we tend to get depressed. The harder we try to suppress our emotions, the worse out they get. Being able to let thoughts come and go is something we can practice throughout the day. Giving it a minute a day is like taking medication: giving yourself permission not to worry about things that are out of your control. It may even help you reevaluate your relationship with food. Don’t forget that being overweight is a sign that there is something seriously wrong with your health.
You aren't doing anything you shouldn't do
If there was ever the case where it was necessary to sacrifice your happiness, it would be eating out when you aren’t ready to cook. Many people reach for alcohol, which can cause addiction, or indulgence in food, which is exactly why they go to restaurants instead of fast food. Even if you have tried both, it is only human to eat out when you're feeling hungry, not when you need to focus on your self-care. Plus, since we know that eating out has consequences, don’t forget to exercise to maintain your strength and overall wellbeing. As for exercising when you aren’t looking forward to it, doing the same thing is pretty much impossible!
You might need to adjust your lifestyle
We live in a society that believes being slim means being thinner. We see our body images on magazines and notice thin models everywhere. Though we may feel that way, being obese is not “normal” body type and is actually a condition that must be looked at for many reasons. There is no question that one should get the best nutrition and exercise they require, but it doesn’t mean that they cannot enjoy other activities in life to keep their health up and stay slim.
For example, not everyone enjoys cooking. Instead, maybe a recipe you make has been passed down for centuries. Or maybe you need to find a healthier way to use ingredients that you might otherwise buy that are unhealthy. No matter what your situation is, consider adjusting your lifestyle for the sake of being healthy. Then, even when your body gets tired and hungry, you will be able to have fun while enjoying delicious foods!
